Osteoblast Response to Hydroxyapatite-Functionalized Titanium Implants was presented as part of the PERI-EDU research programme during the 9th Congress of the Polish Dental Association at Ptak Warsaw Expo.

Research question
Study design
The PRISMA-based search covered PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Scopus. Of 2,016 records, 273 full texts were assessed and 34 studies entered qualitative synthesis.
Main findings
- Nano-hydroxyapatite coatings generally increased osteoblast adhesion, proliferation, differentiation and mineralization.
- The included studies also reported improved bioactivity, osteogenic responses, antibacterial properties and favourable biocompatibility.
- Functionalized coatings incorporated materials such as chitosan, gelatin, magnesium nanoparticles and allicin.
- Observed effects varied with coating composition, fabrication technique and experimental model.
Interpretation
Hydroxyapatite functionalization is a promising surface-engineering strategy, but the diversity of coating formulations and laboratory models limits direct comparisons. Standardized experiments and clinical trials are needed before identifying the most effective composition.
