Integrating Peri-Implantitis Research into Higher Education Curriculum
Developing and Integrating Evidence-Based Teaching Materials and Clinical Tools
The PERI-EDU project (Integrating Peri-Implantitis Research into Higher Education Curriculum) is an international research and educational initiative funded under the Erasmus+ programme. The project aims to improve the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of peri-implantitis by strengthening the knowledge and competencies of students, academic teachers, and dental professionals across Europe.
Peri-implantitis is a significant clinical challenge in modern implant dentistry. Although a large amount of scientific research has been published in this field, the results are often not effectively translated into practical teaching materials or everyday clinical practice. The PERI-EDU project addresses this gap by integrating the latest scientific findings directly into higher education curricula and clinical training programs.
Objectives
The main objective of the project is to enhance innovation in academic teaching in dental faculties by linking modern research findings with educational practices. The project focuses on improving collaboration between universities, developing new teaching materials, and equipping future dental professionals with advanced diagnostic and treatment skills.
Key objectives include:
strengthening international cooperation between partner universities
integrating current research on peri-implantitis into dental education
developing modern teaching materials and innovative training programs
improving knowledge and skills of students, researchers, and clinicians
promoting evidence-based approaches in implant dentistry.
Research and Innovation
A central element of the project is the development of the Peri-Implantitis Immune-Inflammation Index (PII), a new prognostic indicator designed to assess systemic inflammation in patients suffering from peri-implantitis. This tool aims to support clinicians in making more accurate diagnoses and treatment decisions.
The project combines scientific research with practical clinical investigations. Activities include literature reviews, clinical data collection, laboratory analyses, and the development of digital tools and educational resources. These activities will lead to the creation of evidence-based teaching materials, training courses, workshops, and scientific publications.
International Partnership
The project is implemented by a consortium of leading European universities specializing in dentistry, implantology, and periodontology. The coordinating institution is Wroclaw Medical University (Poland), working together with:
Sapienza University of Rome (Italy)
University of Barcelona (Spain)
University of Bern (Switzerland)
Egas Moniz University Institute (Portugal).
This collaboration enables the integration of diverse scientific expertise and promotes knowledge exchange across Europe.
Expected Impact
The PERI-EDU project will contribute to improving the quality of dental education and clinical practice by providing innovative educational tools and research-based knowledge. The results will support academic institutions, educators, and clinicians in addressing the challenges of peri-implantitis and improving patient care.
In the long term, the project aims to foster a culture of innovation in dental education and ensure that future generations of dental professionals are equipped with the latest scientific knowledge and clinical competencies.
