The PERI-EDU project has established a National University Partner Network in Poland, connecting leading academic centres in Warsaw, Szczecin, Poznan, Krakow, Bialystok and Wroclaw.

The network brings together university units representing oral surgery and periodontology around a shared objective: integrating current, evidence-based knowledge about peri-implant diseases into undergraduate dental education. Written confirmations of participation have been obtained from all participating units.

PERI-EDU National University Partner Network – connecting dental education, periodontology and oral surgery across Poland.

A nationwide academic network for peri-implantitis education

The newly created network connects academic teachers and university departments involved in the education of future dentists. Participating centres represent the principal academic disciplines responsible for diagnosing, preventing and treating peri-implant diseases: periodontology, oral surgery and implant dentistry.

Through this cooperation, PERI-EDU educational content is being introduced into undergraduate curricula, lectures, seminars, practical classes and supplementary digital learning activities. The network enables universities to adapt the materials to their institutional programmes while preserving consistency with current scientific evidence and evidence-based dentistry.

University centres participating in the network

  • Warsaw – undergraduate education in oral surgery;
  • Szczecin – undergraduate education in periodontology;
  • Poznan – university-level dental education;
  • Krakow – university-level dental education;
  • Bialystok – undergraduate education in periodontology;
  • Wroclaw – coordination of the national network and implementation within the dental curriculum.

From project materials to formal university curricula

An important result of the network is the institutionalisation of PERI-EDU educational content. The materials are not being used solely as temporary project resources. They are being incorporated into formally delivered university teaching, ensuring that the project’s educational impact continues beyond the funding period.

Confirmed examples of curricular implementation include:

Academic centre Educational setting Implementation
Wroclaw Medical University Fifth-year dental curriculum PERI-EDU content incorporated as a 30-hour educational component carrying 1 ECTS credit.
Medical University of Bialystok Fifth-year Periodontology Implementation coordinated within the academic area represented by Prof. Małgorzata Pietruska.
Medical University of Warsaw Oral Surgery Peri-implantitis included in undergraduate oral-surgery teaching under the academic leadership of Prof. Maciej Czerniuk.
Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin Fifth-year Periodontology PERI-EDU content incorporated into periodontology teaching under the academic leadership of Prof. Monika Machoy-Rakoczy.

Participating centres in Poznan and Krakow are also part of the national university network and have provided written confirmation of their involvement in the project and its educational objectives.

Verified integration into undergraduate teaching

The implementation extends across different years and formats of dental education. In Warsaw, peri-implantitis is incorporated into oral-surgery teaching through content addressing its multifactorial nature, clinical diagnosis and treatment planning. The subject is also connected with implant qualification, assessment of hard and soft tissues and practical clinical decision-making.

This approach ensures that students encounter peri-implant diseases not as an isolated theoretical topic, but as an integral component of contemporary oral surgery, periodontology, implant treatment planning and long-term patient care.

A shared educational framework

The National University Partner Network supports the use of PERI-EDU materials in a way that can be adapted to the curriculum of each participating university. The shared framework includes:

  • the definition and classification of peri-implant health, mucositis and peri-implantitis;
  • clinical and radiographic diagnostic principles;
  • local and systemic risk assessment;
  • biofilm control and prevention;
  • non-surgical and surgical treatment planning;
  • implant-related complications and medically compromised patients;
  • supportive peri-implant care and prevention of disease recurrence;
  • interpretation of biomarkers and emerging research tools.

Connecting oral surgery and periodontology

Peri-implantitis requires interdisciplinary education. Oral surgeons contribute expertise in implant qualification, three-dimensional planning, surgical procedures, tissue regeneration and the management of advanced defects. Periodontologists provide essential knowledge concerning inflammatory diagnosis, biofilm control, risk-factor management, supportive care and long-term maintenance.

The network creates a platform through which these complementary perspectives can be reflected consistently in undergraduate dental education.

Written confirmation from every participating unit

All participating university units have provided written confirmation of their involvement in the PERI-EDU National University Partner Network. These declarations document institutional engagement in the educational objectives of the project and support the planned implementation and dissemination of PERI-EDU resources.

The confirmations also demonstrate that the network is based on formal academic commitment rather than informal dissemination alone.

Institutionalisation strengthens project sustainability

The inclusion of PERI-EDU content in university curricula is a key indicator of project sustainability. It means that the knowledge, educational materials and clinical concepts developed by the consortium can continue to reach new cohorts of dental students after the formal project period has ended.

The 30-hour, 1 ECTS implementation at Wroclaw Medical University and the confirmed curricular activities in Bialystok, Warsaw and Szczecin demonstrate the transition from project development to permanent academic use.

Why this is an important milestone

The establishment of the National University Partner Network significantly increases the reach of PERI-EDU within Polish dental education. It connects institutions across the country and supports a more consistent approach to teaching the diagnosis, prevention and management of peri-implant diseases.

By bringing together universities, disciplines and academic teachers, the network contributes to a shared long-term objective: ensuring that future dentists enter clinical practice with current, scientifically justified knowledge of peri-implant health and disease.

A NATIONAL UNIVERSITY NETWORK FOR EVIDENCE-BASED PERI-IMPLANT EDUCATION

Six academic centres, complementary dental disciplines and one shared goal: integrating current peri-implantitis research into undergraduate education and future clinical practice.
