MicroRNAs as Potential Biomarkers for Peri-Implant Diseases was presented as part of the PERI-EDU research programme during the 9th Congress of the Polish Dental Association at Ptak Warsaw Expo.

Research question
Study design
Following PRISMA 2020 and Cochrane guidance, the review searched PubMed/MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Scopus. Ten studies were included: five case-control, four prospective cohort and one cross-sectional study. Quality was assessed with Newcastle-Ottawa and QUADAS-2 tools.
Main findings
- Differential microRNA expression was observed between healthy sites and sites affected by peri-implant mucositis or peri-implantitis.
- miR-155, miR-146a and let-7e-5p were associated with peri-implant inflammation and clinical parameters.
- Reported associations included bleeding on probing, probing depth, clinical attachment loss and marginal bone loss.
- Peri-implant crevicular fluid and tissue profiles may offer diagnostic or prognostic information, but studies used heterogeneous samples and analytical methods.
Interpretation
MicroRNAs are promising research biomarkers, not replacements for clinical and radiographic diagnosis. Standardized longitudinal validation is necessary before they can be introduced into routine patient care.
