Research question

Can laser modification create titanium surface characteristics that improve fibroblast adhesion and support the peri-implant soft-tissue seal?

Study design

The review searched PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Web of Science for in-vitro studies evaluating fibroblast responses to laser-modified titanium. From 427 identified records, 27 studies were included after screening; the poster reports a low risk of bias across the included evidence.

Main findings

  • Laser-treated titanium generally improved fibroblast adhesion, spreading, elongated morphology and metabolic activity.
  • Micro- and nanotopographies promoted cell adhesion, proliferation and alignment, while improved wettability further supported attachment.
  • Biological outcomes depended strongly on wavelength, energy and irradiation protocol; optimized exposure performed better than insufficient treatment.
  • Three-directional irradiation and erbium-laser protocols were among the approaches associated with favourable responses while preserving surface integrity.

Interpretation

Laser modification appears capable of supporting fibroblast behaviour and potentially improving peri-implant soft-tissue integration. The effect is protocol-dependent, so translation requires reproducible laser parameters and confirmation in clinical studies.
