Evidence and empathy in oral health education
During the ADEE Annual Meeting 2026, the PERI-EDU project was presented in a chaired e-poster session devoted to curriculum development. The session combined a concise presentation with a moderated discussion, creating an opportunity to share the project’s scientific and educational approach with the international dental education community.
The poster, entitled “Evidence and Empathy as the Focus in Oral Health Professionals’ Education”, addresses an important challenge: dental implants are increasingly common, while peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis remain major threats to long-term treatment success. University curricula therefore need to prepare future oral health professionals to recognise risk, prevent disease, communicate effectively with patients and apply evidence-based care.

What does the project contribute?
Research
PERI-EDU combines clinical assessment with the analysis of blood markers, tissue samples and explanted implants in advanced peri-implant disease.
Curriculum development
Evidence on peri-implantitis is being translated into teaching materials, lectures and international academic exchange.
Patient education
Clear and accessible resources help patients understand prevention, risk factors, maintenance and the importance of early diagnosis.
A European collaboration
The Erasmus+ PERI-EDU project brings together an international academic team to integrate peri-implantitis into higher education and to investigate the relationship between peri-implant disease and general health. The conference presentation highlighted the project’s research activities, teaching resources, lectures, academic exchange and materials for patients.
Poster authors: Eduard Valmaseda-Castellón, Rui Figueiredo, Josep Arnabat-Domínguez, Marzena Dominiak, Jacek Matys, Piero Papi, Umberto Romeo, Ricardo Alves, Gil Alcoforado and Anton Sculean.
