Calcium Phosphate Coatings for Osseointegration of Zirconia Implants was presented as part of the PERI-EDU research programme during the 9th Congress of the Polish Dental Association at Ptak Warsaw Expo.

Research question
Study design
The PRISMA-based review searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Embase through July 2026. Twenty-seven studies were included from 707 identified records. In-vitro and in-vivo evidence covered several formulations and deposition techniques.
Main findings
- Evaluated formulations included hydroxyapatite, beta-tricalcium phosphate, octacalcium phosphate, fluoridated hydroxyapatite and composite coatings.
- Deposition methods included biomimetic approaches, sol-gel, plasma spraying, electrophoretic deposition, radiofrequency magnetron sputtering and laser-assisted techniques.
- Coatings generally improved wettability, bioactivity, osteoblast adhesion and proliferation, osteogenic differentiation and bone-to-implant contact.
- Multifunctional coatings incorporating therapeutic ions, antimicrobial agents, growth factors or nanoparticles showed additional potential benefits.
Interpretation
Calcium phosphate coatings are promising for enhancing the biological performance of zirconia. Considerable heterogeneity in composition, production, characterization and outcome assessment currently prevents selection of one best strategy.
