NewsMed has published an article highlighting an essential message of the PERI-EDU project: successful implant treatment depends not only on placing an implant, but also on the patient’s biological condition, capacity for healing and long-term preventive care.

Implant placement is only the beginning
In the NewsMed article, Prof. Marzena Dominiak explains that the technical possibility of placing a dental implant does not guarantee successful healing. Stable osseointegration depends on adequate blood supply, bone quality, balanced bone remodelling and the patient’s individual healing potential.
For this reason, immediate or “one-day” implant treatment is not suitable for every patient. Postponing implant placement or dividing treatment into stages may be the safer option when local or systemic conditions are unfavourable. This approach does not mean abandoning treatment—it means creating better biological conditions for a predictable long-term result.
Local tissue conditions
Bone quality, vascularisation, inflammation and tissue-remodelling capacity should be evaluated before treatment.
Systemic health
Diabetes, obesity, metabolic disorders, osteoporosis and autoimmune disease may modify healing and inflammatory responses.
Long-term prevention
Professional follow-up, effective oral hygiene and early assessment of warning signs remain essential years after implantation.
Peri-implantitis requires a broader perspective
The publication also draws attention to peri-implantitis—an inflammatory disease around dental implants accompanied by progressive loss of supporting bone. Although bacterial biofilm remains a key factor, disease development and progression may also be influenced by smoking, chronic disease, metabolic health and the individual inflammatory response.
Pain, bleeding, swelling or mobility around an implant should not be ignored, even when the implant has functioned without problems for many years. A change in symptoms requires professional assessment and appropriate diagnostics.
Public communication is part of the PERI-EDU mission
The NewsMed publication brings PERI-EDU’s educational message to a wider audience. By explaining the relationship between systemic health, bone biology, inflammation and implant outcomes, it supports more informed decisions by both patients and dental professionals.
