Project knowledge presented in clinical education

PERI-EDU themes were presented during Dental Summer Garden 2026, a professional dental conference held in Wrocław. The programme brought together dental hygienists, dental assistants, dentists and students interested in modern prevention, periodontology, patient communication and evidence-based clinical care.

Prof. Marzena Dominiak delivered the lecture “Dentistry and Peri-Implantitis vs Obesity – Facts and Myths in Prevention and Treatment”. The presentation translated current scientific evidence into clinically relevant messages for prevention, treatment planning, implant therapy and long-term patient care.

Why obesity matters in oral and implant health

Obesity is a complex multisystem disease associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, oxidative stress, adipokine dysregulation, insulin resistance, microbiome disturbance and impaired tissue regeneration. These interconnected mechanisms may adversely affect oral tissues and modify susceptibility to disease.

The lecture reviewed how obesity-related inflammatory and metabolic alterations may:

• amplify periodontal inflammation and tissue breakdown;
• disturb the balance between the host response and oral microbiota;
• affect salivary function and contribute to xerostomia or halitosis;
• impair wound healing, osseointegration and bone regeneration;
• alter jawbone remodelling and marrow quality;
• increase the complexity of prevention and treatment in patients with dental implants.

Shared behavioural, dietary and socioeconomic determinants can further reinforce disease burden. For this reason, obesity should be considered in interdisciplinary risk assessment rather than treated only as a measure of body weight.

Clinical and educational implications

The available evidence supports careful assessment of metabolic and inflammatory risk factors in periodontal care, implant treatment and oral surgery. Patients with obesity may benefit from tailored preventive programmes, closer monitoring of peri-implant tissues, optimisation of modifiable risk factors and collaboration between dental and medical professionals.

The presentation also reflected the educational mission of PERI-EDU: integrating current peri-implantitis research into professional training and helping clinicians connect local oral findings with the patient’s broader systemic health.
